Is it possible for a person outside of the hierarchy of the modern LDS church to be a prophet? (point to Christ, cry repentance?)
Many would answer No.
But I believe there's so many examples of that happening in the scriptures.
There's no use even considering the content of a possible wilderness prophet's message, if a person has already made up their mind that such a man could never exist. Nothing he says could matter, even if true. The decision was made prior to investigating content, and further inquiry about that content cannot then be sincere.
Prophets crying repentance are never received well. True religions despise hearing they're in need of repentance. The messengers get stoned, cast out, and killed. Even though its an act of love to deliver such a message.
The truthfulness of a message should not be measured upon the palatability of it. Historically speaking, prophetic warnings seem to cause ulcers.. not warm fuzzies.
